We Made it!
Day one in Florida and we’ve already gotten quite a bit done. Dr. Hilary Swain has been so engaging and gave us her own set of directions from the Fort Myers airport to the Archbold Biological Station. Her suggested route was longer, but scenic. In following Dr. Swain’s directions, we crossed the Caloosahatchee River, one of the main westbound rivers taking water from Lake Okeechobee, and stopped by the WP Franklin Campground.
Dr. Swain’s directions also lead us through an old town named Alva, which was founded back in the 1800s, as well as through LaBelle, an old town within which many migrant laborers reside. Finally, we were lead to a gorgeous and seemingly endless plot of land Dr. Swain informed us is owned by the Lykes Brothers Ranch. The Lykes Ranch spreads out on 337,000 acres of Florida, and we all spent a good deal of time just trying to wrap our heads around that number. Again, it’s only day one and we’ve already learned so much and have gotten to see some beautiful parts of Florida. We can’t wait to see what else is in store for us in the following six days and to keep you all posted! Remember you can also follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to keep up with our progress this week. We’ll also all be vlogging (despite how much we prefer to be behind the camera) and you can expect to see some pretty cool behind the scenes content from us.
